Notes for James W. Donahue
John Donohew’s online database
10 has his name as James S. Donohew, but the only middle initial I’ve seen on any record is “W”, on the birth record of his daughter Julia Ann.
Rowan Co., Ky death register for 1878 lists James W. Donahew, age 63, farmer, married, died 6 Nov 1878, cause of death “Arbetes”, born in Montgomery Co., Ky, parents Mathew & Marthia Donahew, father born in Virginia, mother’s birthplace not known.
Notes for Julia Ann Steele
John Donohew’s web site
10 records her name as Lucinda Julia Steele, citing a Feb 1999 email from Phyllis Mossing. All the records I’ve seen show her name as either Julia, Julian, Juliann, or in one case (the birth record of her daughter Melvina) as J. A. F. Steel.
Census
In the 1880 census she is listed as Julia Donohew, 63, widow, with her daughter Julia and son-in-law Andrew Cock.
Notes for James W. & Julia Ann (Family)
This family is in my database mainly because their daughter Amanda married John Hall, and two grandsons of their son Jesse married daughters of John Pettit and Lizzie Hardin. I am probably also related to the Andrew Cock who married their daughter Julia Ann, but I don’t know who Andrew’s parents were.
John Donohew’s online GEDCOM file
10 shows 12 children for this family, including in addition to the nine listed here, Susan with no dates, Sarah born about 1856, and Molly with dates 9 May 1867 to 12 July 1939. (No marriages listed for any of the three.) As sources for those three daughters he cites a Feb 1999 email from Phyllis Mossing. The apparent source for Sarah is the 1870 census of Rowan Co., which lists a Sarah age 14 with the family. But since the 1860 census as well as Rowan Co. birth records show a daughter Melvina born in 1856, I suspect that Sarah is either the same person as Melvina, or else she is a relative other than a daughter. (The 1870 census does not show relationships.) Susan is most likely the middle name of Amanda S. I do not know of any primary source for the daughter Molly. She does not appear in any census with the family, and Julia would have been 50 at the time of Molly’s birth.
Census
1840 census of Bath Co., Ky, E. Slate Creek, p. 232, line 3 records:
Donehoo, Jas; 1 m < 5, 1 m 5-9; 1 m 20-29; 1 f 20-29.
1850 census of Morgan Co., Ky, lists as family #224:
James Dunahoo, 35; Julia, 30; Thomas, 14; Jesse, 13; Joseph, 8; Amanda, 4; Mary, 2 mo.; Sarah Reed, 16.
1860 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Morehead P.O., enumerated 13 July, lists on p. 17 as family #119/123:
Donohue, James, 45; Juliann, 43, wife; Thomas J., 25; Joseph G., 18; Amandy, 15; John B., 13; Mary A., 10; Isabel K., 8; Melvina, 4; Juliann, 1. All born Ky.
1870 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Pearce precinct, p. 123, lists as family #20:
Donahue, James, 55, farmer; Julia, 53; Thomas, 35; Sarah, 14; Julia, 10. All born in Ky.
(Since Sarah is not listed with the family in 1860, and Melvina is known to have been born on 12 Aug 1856, Sarah is probably either the same person as Melvina age 4 in 1860, or else she is a granddaughter.)
