He was recorded in the 1880 census as age 12, suggesting a birth date in late 1867 or early 1868, but he does not appear at all in the 1870 census. The 1900 census gives his birth date as Sep 1872.

His gravestone has the years 1868 - 1903. The date of death is consistent with Ruth’s statement on her marriage license application that her father died when she was two years old. His death must have been late in 1903, though, if he was the father of Eunice.
