Frank Mitchell’s online Sloan Database lists his birthdate as 27 Jan 1828, while his gravestone says 7 Jan 1829.

This Sloan family is not, so far as anyone can tell, related to the Sloans who came into Rowan County from Floyd and Knott counties. Esbon and his father were both born in Ohio, and his grandfather in Pennsylvania. He did not come to Kentucky until about the time of his marriage. I am entering the family mainly because his grandson, William Baldwin “Bill” Sloan Jr. married my third cousin Judy Hall, and since so many Sloans from the Elliottville area married my Trent cousins (children of Ranze Trent and Mary Pettit and of Julius Trent and Martha Black), and another one of them married my great-aunt Isabelle Petitt, I wanted to trace the ancestry of Bill Sloan far back enough to show that he wasn’t from the same line as the other Sloans (who were all descendants of Martin Van Buren Slone of Floyd Co.)

Frank Mitchell’s Slone/Sloan database lists the date of their marriage as 17 Mar 1872, citing the Esbon Sloan family bible. But he also lists the date of their son George’s birth as 19 Mar 1869. If both dates are correct, then George may be the son of an earlier marriage, since in 1872 Esbon would have been 44 and Eliza Jane 29, an age at which either or both may easily have been previously married.

1880 census of Pine Grove precinct, Rowan Co., Ky, enumerated 1 June, lists on p. 32 as family #229/249:
Sloan, Esbon, 40, farmer; Jane, wife, 30; George, son, 12; Isaac, son, 7; Frances, dau, 6; William B., son, 5; Matilda, dau, 1. All born Ohio/Ohio/Ohio.

1900 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Pine Grove precinct, enumerated 6 June, lists on p. 4A as family #57:
