1870 census of Elliott Co., Ky, Moccasin precinct, lists as household #67, James S. Kegley, farmer, 21, b. Virginia, single. (The middle initial should be L, but it looks more like an S, even considering the notorious similarity of S and L in old handwriting. Perhaps the census taker filled out the formal census from notes taken earlier, and misread his own notes.)
1880 census of Elliott Co., Ky, Mocassin precinct, lists Lafayette Kegley, 31, born Va/Va/Va, no relation, working on the farm of William A. Thompson age 37 with wife Sarah F. age 27, born Va/Va/Va (household #249).
1900 census of Elliott Co., Ky, Mocassin precinct, enumerated 20 June, lists on p. 10A as household #147/151:
Kegley, Layfayette, 50, b. Aug 1849, Va Va Va, single, farmer; Rab, Julius, boarder, 68, b. 1832, Germany Germany Germany, widowed, immigrated 1861, naturalized, gardener.
