1860 census of Floyd Co., Virginia, Indian Valley township, enumerated 1 Aug, lists on p. 133 as family #968/903:
Timothy Goad, 37, farmer; Nancy, 27; Evaline, 16; Geo, 14; Eva, 12; Mary, 10; Hillery, 7 (male); Albert, 5/12. All born in Virginia.

Barb Reininger’s annotated census for Goad families13 gives the name of Timothy’s first wife as Matilda Hewett, citing as the basis for the maiden name Floyd Co. Virginia death records showing Matilda Goad, age 35, born North Carolina, died 9 Dec 1857, cause of death fever, mother Mary Huet. But there are no 1857 birth or deaths at all included in the transcription of extant 1853-1872 birth and death records compiled by Marjorie Fluor and Marguerite Tise21 in 1981. Perhaps some other records have been uncovered since the book was published?

Since the marriage return very clearly gives Matilda’s surname as Shinault, either she had been previously married to a Shinault before marrying Timothy Goad, or else her mother had remarried to a Hewett before the time of Matilda’s death. Given her age at marriage and age at death, the latter seems more likely.

Janice K. Smith’s Goad and Webb Families contains on p. 495 a photocopy of a marriage return list signed by John Cock Sr. that begins “I John Cock do hereby certify that I have joined together in the holy state of matrimony to wit” and that contains an entry “Timothy Goad and Matilda Shinault on the 7th day of December 1843 By publication”. (There are five other Apr 1843 to Jan 1844 marriages on the list.)
