Notes for Joshua & Rebecca (Family)
This family is only in my database to show the ancestry of Carrie Gregory who married Albert Riddle (since there are a lot of Gregory connections to my Jones ancestors, I wanted to find out if Carrie was related on that side as well, but she seems not to be.)
Census
1850 census of Bath Co., Ky, district 1, enumerated 10 Aug, lists as family #345:
Joshua Craig, 37, farmer; Rebecca, 25; Mary, 7; Ann E., 6; William L., 5; Martha J., 3; Sarah, 2; Abigail, 5/12. All born in Kentucky.
1860 census of Bath Co., Ky, Wyoming precinct, lists as family #272:
Joshua Craig, 45, shoe maker; Rebecca, 37; Mary A., 18; William, 16; Jennie, 15; Sarah, 13; Abbe (female), 11; Nannie, 10; James, 7; Emily, 6; Maranda, 4; Ann E., 2. All born in Ky.
The Ann E age 2 is unusual, since they had a daughter Ann E age 6 in 1850. Perhaps this one is a grandchild. Many of the ages are also very inconsistent with birth records. For example, Emily was born in Aug 1856, which would make her 3 in June 1860. And Nannie (Nancy) was recorded as born in July 1854, which would make her only 5 in June 1860.
1870 census of Bath Co., Ky, Sharpsburg, lists as family #69:
Craig, Joshua, 56, farmer; Rebecca, 47; Nancy, 16; Emily, 14; Miranda, 11; Thomas, 9. All born in Ky.
The next household is that of their daughter Martha Jane with her husband Thomas Gregory, and the preceding household is that of Rebecca’s parents, William and Elizabeth Warren.
1880 census of Bath Co., Ky, Wyoming precinct, enumerated 1 June, lists on p. 1 as family #5/6:
Warren, William W., 77, widowed, b. Ky Va Ky, laborer; Craig, Rebecca, 58, dau, married; Craig, John, 68, son-in-law, laborer, b. Ky Penn Ky; Nancy, 26, granddau, single; Thomas, 19, grandson; Manley, Thomas, 28, grandson, single, idle. All except William Warren and John Craig born Ky Ky Ky.
It’s an unusual ordering of the family. It would have been more usual to enter Joshua (misentered here as John) as the head of household, with William Warren as father-in-law and Thomas Manley as nephew.
