Census Notes for Owen Robinson “Robert” & Martha “Mattie” Zeruah (Family)
1900 census of Pike Co., Ky, Lick precinct, enumerated 19 June, lists on p. 13B as family #206/210:
Quesenbury, Robert, 24, b. May 1876, Va Va Va; Mattie Z., wife, 20, b. Jan 1880, NC NC NC, married 5 years, mother of 4 children, 4 living; Plato, son, 6, b. Oct 1893; Lemer, dau, 4, b. May (year blank); Licie, dau, 3, b. Sep 1896; Fred, son, 4/12, b. Jan 1900. All children born Ky Va NC.
Note that if “Lemer” was 4 and born in May, then it would have been May 1896, which would conflict with the birthdate of “Licie”. Either she was really five years old and born May 1895, or else Lissie was really only 2 years 9 months, and born Sep 1897.
1910 census of Pike Co., Ky, precinct 13, enumerated 29 Apr, lists on p. 11A as family #176/182:
Quesenbery, Robert, 38, b. Va Va Va, 2nd marriage; Zeruah, 28, b. NC NC NC, 1st marriage, married 19 years, mother of 7 children, 7 living; Platis, son 17; Lena, dau, 15; Lissie, dau, 12; Fred, son, 10; Gypsie, dau, 7; Ray, son, 5; Bart, son, 11/12. Platis born in Virginia, all other children in Kentucky.
1920 census of Pike Co., Ky, Looney precinct, enumerated 13 Jan, lists on p. 3B as family #53:
Quisinberry, A. R., 48; M. J., wife, 45; Fred, son, 22; Lis, dau, 20; Leo, dau, 19; Ray, son, 15; Zell, dau, 13; Bart, son, 11; Frank, son, 9; Perry, son, 4; Cleve, son, 4. All are listed as born Ky Ky Ky, although that is inconsistent with other records.
The ages and even the birth order of the children seem very confused, too. Fred, Lis and Leo (presumably Lena) have reversed their age order from what it was in the 1900 and 1910 censuses, as have Ray and Zell, assuming she is the same as Gypsy.
1930 census of Pike Co., Ky, 8th district, enumerated 15 Apr, lists on p. 17A as family #272/273:
Quesenberry, Robert, 69, b. Va Va Va, age at first marriage unknown (”un”); Ernsie, wife, 54, b. NC NC NC, age at first marriage 18; Bart, son, 21; Frank, son, 17; Perry, son, 15; Clive, son, 15; Lawson, Virginia, granddau, 9, b. Ky Colorado Ky. Bart through Clive born Ky Va NC. The marginal notes specify the location as Slick Rock Fork of Ferrells Creek.
The next household is headed by Algie Belcher age 22, who is married to their daughter Zella.
There are no other members of this family (except possibly married daughters) in Pike Co. in 1930, nor anywhere in Kentucky that I can find. The older sons appear to have moved back to Virginia, although it might be hard to identify them given how much variation is seen in the names, and the number of Quesenberrys in that area. (The 1930 census shows about 400 in Carroll Co., 200 in Floyd Co., and about 50 each in Pulaski and Wythe.)
1940 census of Pike Co., Ky, ED 98-44B, enumerated 22 April, lists on p. 9A as family #126, on Ferris Creek:
Quesenberry, Robinson, 68, widowed, b. Va, farmer; Perry, son, 24, single, born Ky, coal miner. Lawson, Malissa, grandda, 19, single, b. Ky.
