His gravestone says that he was born 15 Oct 1852, but censuses are more consistent with 1850 or 1851. In particular, he was recorded as age 8 in the 1860 census, and he had a sister born 26 Nov 1852 (her birth recorded in Morgan Co. birth records.)

Bath Co., Ky birth records list Sarah A. McLane, born 10 Aug 1853 in Slate precinct, father James McLane, mother’s maiden name Nancy Swapshire.

Her gravestone is inscribed “Sarah, Wife of A. J. Foster Born Aug 13, 1852 Died Apr 13, 1910”

Be careful not to confuse this family with that of Andrew J. Foster, born 18 Oct 1850 in Franklin Co., Ky, died 30 Nov 1922 in Louisville, Jefferson Co., Ky, son of Joel Foster and Jane Harlow, who married Sarah J. George (12 Oct 1851 - 20 Nov 1924.) Since they both appear sometimes as simply A. J. Foster, and they were born the same month, and had wives with the same name, it would be very easy to do, but the Andrew J. Foster family appears consistently in Louisville in all the censuses.

1880 census of Putnam Co., Indiana, Marion township, enumerated 12 June, lists on p. 18 as family #113/116:
Foster, Alonzo J., 29, farmer; Sarah, 28, wife; James W., 7, son; Mary E., 4, dau; Alva P., 10/12, b. Aug, son. Alva born Indiana Ky Ky, all others Ky Ky Ky.

1900 census of Powell Co., Kentucky, enumerated 26 June, lists on p. 25B as family #433/464:
Foster, Alonzo, 48, b. Oct 1851, farmer; Sarrah, wife, 45, b. Aug 1854, married 28 years, mother of 10 children, 8 living; Alva, son, 19, b. Aug 1880; Manda, dau, 18, b. Apr 1882; Mattie, son, 14, b. Sep 1885; Henry, son, 12, b. Apr 1888; Maggie, dau, 9, b. June 1891; Della, dau, 5, b. Sep 1894; Ival, son, 11/12, b. July 1899. Alva is listed as born in Indiana, all others and their parents in Kentucky.
