The 1850 census and his death certificate both state that he was born in Kentucky, but most other censuses and most of the death records for his children state that he was born in Virginia. His parents probably moved from Virginia to Kentucky the year he was born.

His death certificate records Enick Sexton, age 77 years 11 months 17 days, born 12 June 1839 in Kentucky, died 29 Oct 1916 in Willard, Carter Co., Ky, married, farmer, father James Sexton, maiden name of mother “Malisa Sexton, same name”, both born in Va, cause of death “cronic valvular heart trouble and hardening of arteries”, informant Alice Triplett, Willard, Ky.

The birthdate may be a year too early; he was listed in the censuses as 9 in 1850, 20 in 1860, 32 in 1870, 38 in 1880, and 60 in 1900.

Her death certificate records Sarah Sexton, age 86 years 7 months 8 days, born 12 July 1839 in Kentucky, widow, father Stephen Mitchell, maiden name of mother unknown, died 20 April 1926 in Ashland, Boyd Co., Ky, cause of death flue and old age, informant Mrs. J. R. Conley, Ashland, Ky, burial in Willard Cemetery.

1850 census of Floyd Co., Ky, enumerated 2 July, lists as family #150:
Stephen Mitchell, 50; Anna, 46; Mary A., 16; Malinda, 14; Sarah, 12; Wm, 10; John, 8; Thomas, 6. Stephen through Sarah born in Virginia, the three boys in Kentucky.

1860 census of Carter Co., Ky, Star Furnace P.O., enumerated 18 July, lists on p. 99 as family #723/645:
Enoch Sexton, 20, farmer; Sarah J., 20; Martha A., 2; William R., 4/12. All born in Ky.

The preceding household is that of Enoch’s parents, and the following one is headed by Samuel Sexton, age 29.
