Census Notes for James S. & Martha J. (Family)
1880 census of Bath Co., Ky, Wyoming precinct, enumerated 19 June, lists on p. 31 as family #287/295:
Boyd, James, 39, farmer; Martha J., 24, wife; Mary L., 13, dau; Thomas, 10, son; Gemima, 8, dau; Mahala, 6, dau. All born Ky Ky Ky.
I cannot find this family in the 1900 census, unless they are the following:
1900 census of Bath Co., Ky, Owingsville district 5, enumerated 15 June, lists on p. 13A as family #273/275:
Boyd, William S., 62, b. Mar 1838, married 35 years crossed out replaced with 21, farmer; Martha J., wife 42, b. Dec 1857, married 25 years crossed out replaced with 21. Both born Ky Ky Ky.
The birthdates don’t fit very well, but the marital status with the two replacements looks about like it would fit if they both initially reported the number of years they had been married to someone. The number of children column for Martha is so blobby that it is unreadable; the number of living children looks kind of like a Q. If I had to make a choice, I would say the left side is a superimposed 5 and 1 and the right side is a superimposed 2 and 0. This might represent entering the total number of children from both marriages, and then replacing it with the number from the current marriage, as was done for the number of years married.
As for the names, there is no family with these names in the 1880 census, which there should be considering the 21 years married. So maybe his full name was James William S. Boyd?
1910 census of Bath Co., Ky, district 6, enumerated 2 April, lists on p. 6B as family #125:
Boyd, James S., 68, second marriage, farmer; Martha J., wife, 53, first marriage, married 30 years, mother of 0 children; Thompson, Lee, laborer, 8. All born Ky Ky Ky.
This record gives me pause, and makes me wonder if perhaps I have misidentified the Martha J. Hunt who married James Boyd with the Martha J. Hunt who married Ben Franklin Pettit in 1871, since the latter marriage resulted in at least three children who were living in 1910. But I cannot find any other young Martha Hunt in the 1860 or 1870 census of Bath Co. or surrounding counties.
