The annual report of births to the Kentucky state auditor lists Losie Bailey, female, born 8 Dec 1909 in Morgan Co., father Charley Bailey, mother’s maiden name Pelfrey. (The whole name is filled in for the mother, but the image is too faint to see.)

Her death certificate records Loca Bailey, age 17 years 6 months 8 days, born 14 Oct 1910 in Kentucky, died 6 April 1927 in West Liberty, Morgan Co., Ky, single, father Charles Bailey, mother’s maiden name Nola Pelfrey, both born in Kentucky, cause of death appendicitis, informant blank, burial in Salyers Cemetery.

Since she was listed in the 1910 census, taken in April, as age 7 months, she clearly cannot have been born in 1910. But October is a better fit for being listed as 7 months old in April than December is. (17 years 6 months 8 days before 6 April 1927 would really be 28 Sep 1909, but it is a very common error in age at death reports to subtract whichever number is smaller from the larger one, field by field, which is what has been done here.) Since the birth reports before 1911 were compiled at the beginning of the following year from lists submitted by doctors and midwives of all births they attended during the previous year, they are not nearly as reliable as records that are registered currently with the birth are. (Handwriting can be misread, dates meant for one birth can be recorded for a different person, etc.) So I am tentatively assuming that there was some error in reporting the birth, and that she was born 14 Oct 1909.
