In 1900 they were listed with Richard’s mother and stepfather as:
Richard, stepson, 20, b. Nov 1879, married 1 year; Maggie, cousin, 20, b. Aug 1879, married 1 year, mother of 1 child, 1 living; Emma C., cousin, 9/12, b. Aug 1899.
Richard was John’s first cousin once removed as well as his stepson, since Carolyn’s two husbands were first cousins of each other. But I do not know what relationship John had to Maggie other than stepfather-in-law.
1910 census of Bath Co., Ky, Preston precinct, enumerated 6 April, lists on p. 3A as family #51:

1920 census of Bath Co., Ky, White Sulphur precinct, enumerated 17 Jan, lists on p. 10B as family #208/211:

The preceding household is headed by Leroy McCarty age 36 with wife Sophia age 44, and the following one is headed by Joseph McCarty age 42 with wife Alice age 37.
