Census Notes for John W. Downhour
1860 census of Hocking Co., Ohio, Ward township, Logan P.O., enumerated 27 July, lists on p. 224 as family #1556/1544:
Adam Downhour, 43, farmer; Susan, 19; Emily, 17; Jane, 15; John, 12; Rebecca, 8; Adam, 6. All born in Ohio.
The next household is headed by Emanuel Downhour, age 33, and the one after that by Jacob Downhour, age 65.
In 1870 he was listed as John W. Downhouer, age 23, b. Ohio, as a farm laborer with the family of Jacob Shafer, age 31.
Notes for Sarah Larilla Devoll
Her middle name, which she sometimes went by, was variously spelled as Aurelia, Arilla, Larilla, and Lorilla. Her maiden name appears as Devol, Devoll, Devaul, and Devault.
Census
1850 census of Hocking Co., Ohio, Ward township, enumerated 20 Sep, lists as family #92/94:
Phillip Devoll, 38, b. Rhode Island; Sarah, 37, b. Maine; Cynthia, 18; Polly, 16; Eliza, 13; Lorilla, 11; Allen, 4; Emely, 5/12; Gardner, 8. All children born in Ohio.
The next household is headed by Richmond Devoll, age 41, also born in Rhode Island, presumably a brother.
I cannot find Sarah Lorilla/Arelia in the 1860 census. She was not with her parents, and there is no Sarah Richard(s) of the right age range. She may have had a first marriage that produced no living children. With Sarah being such a common name, and there being so many different spellings of her middle name, there is not much hope of identifying her without knowing what surname to look for.
1860 census of Hocking Co., Ohio, Ward township, Logan P.O., enumerated 25 July, lists on p. 219 as family #1522/1560:
Phillip Devol, 49, farmer, b. R.I.; Sarah, 48, b. N.Y.; Allen, 15, b. Oh; Emily, 10, b. Oh; Eva, 3, b. Oh; Gardner Arnold, 20, b. Ohio.
The next household is headed by Richmond Devol, age 51.
1870 census of Hocking Co., Ohio, Ward township, Haydenville P.O., enumerated 9 June, lists on p. 15 as family #106:
Devaul, Phillip, 58, farmer, b. Rode Island; Sarah, 58, b. New Hampshire; Richard, Aurely, 31, b. Ohio; Eva, 13, b. Oh; Mary, 2, b. Oh.
Eva is probably the daughter Eva age 3 from the 1860 census, and if so, should have the surname Devaul instead of Richard.
The next household is headed by Allen Devaul.
