Lewis, age 32 years 7 days, born 24 May 1858 in Morgan Co., Ky, died 31 May 1920 in Blairs Mills, North Fork precinct, Morgan Co., Kentucky, married, father Till. A. Lewis (Jr. or Sr., can’t tell which), mother’s maiden name Herm. Eliott, both born in Morgan Co., Ky, cause of death paralysis, informant Robert Carter, Blairs Mills, Ky, burial in Collins Cemetery.

(Ancestry has transcribed her name as Mrs. Sarah H. Lewis, which would be a very plausible interpretation if there were not independent evidence of her name. The thinner strokes have faded out, leaving only the heavy ones, so that nearly everything before the middle initial is invisible. Ancestry interpreted the leading H as an M, the top of the a as the top of an r, and the connecting stroke at the bottom between the two n’s as the bottom of an S.)

Early census records are more consistent with a birth date in 1859; she was recorded as age 1 in 1860, age 11 in 1870, and age 21 in 1880. It was not until the 1900 census that she started reporting her birth date as 1858.
