Her death certificate records Mary Downs, age 92 years 4 months 20 days, born 17 Aug 1836 in Bath Co., Ky, died 6 Jan 1929 in Bath Co., Ky, widow of Daniel Downs, father George McClain, born in Ky, maiden name of mother don’t know, cause of death influenza, informant Taylor Downs, Salt Lick, Ky, burial in Upper Salt Lick.
Her obituary in the Bath County News-Outlook of Jan 17, 1929 reported:
“Mrs. Mary Downs - Died on January 6, 1929 at the home of her son Taylor Downs of near Salt Lick. Mrs. Mary Downs was the widow of Henry Daniel Downs who died May 4, 1920. She was the daughter of George and Rachel McClain. She was 92 years, 4 months and 19 days old. She was the mother of eleven children, five of whom are living. 1. William Downs of Pine Grove, 2. Mrs. W.M. Armitage of Pine Grove, 3. Mrs. Jessie Smith of near Olympia, 4. Andrew Jackson Downs of near Salt Lick, 5. Taylor Downs of near Salt Lick. She was born August 17, 1836 and was married to Henry Daniel Downs in 1853. She leaves 55 grandchildren, 106 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.”
The obituary has the name of her mother wrong, but since her mother died when she was nine years old it is likely nobody living at the time of her death remembered her mother.
