Notes for Joel Shack Gray Markwell
There were two Joel Markwells in Rowan Co. born just a few months apart. I am primarily interested in the other one, the son of Aaron Markwell, since some of his children married relatives of mine, but I want to keep track of the records for them both so as to avoid confusion.
His death certificate records Shack Joel Markwell, age 84 years 2 months 4 days, born 8 June 1868 in Rowan Co., Ky, died 12 Feb 1953 in Clearfield, Rowan Co., Ky, married, occupation railroader for M. & N.F. Railroad, father Tom Markwell, mother’s maiden name unknown, informant Etta Markwell, cause of death cerebral hemorrhage due to arteriosclerosis & hypertension, burial in Craiger Cemetery, Clearfield, Ky.
The reported age at death is inconsistent with the reported birthdate, and the reported birthdate is inconsistent with census records (in particular, the 1870 census which listed him as born in Dec 1869), and with cemetery records.
His gravestone, in what is now called Stewart Cemetery, says S. Joel Markwell, June 19, 1868 - Feb 12, 1953.

Rowan Co. marriage book 3, p. 86, records the marriage on 4 Sep 1898 of Joel Markwell, age 24, laborer, residence Morehead, born in and father born in Rowan Co., mother born in Ohio, to Etta D. Gordon, age 17, born in Mason Co., Ky, father born in Virginia, mother born in Fleming Co., Ky, at the residence of the bride by H. F. Martin, witnesses M. Elam and John Gordon, bond surety by John H. Gordon.

The next household is that of Etta’s parents, John and Annie Gordon. Three households below at #203 is the family of Joel S. Markwell age 26 with wife Etta age 22.

Markwell, Joel, 38, driller at rock quarry; Etta, wife, 28, first marriage for both, married 11 years, mother of 5 children, 5 living; Clasa E., dau, 10; Harlan, son, 9; Anna E., dau, 8; Avery L., son, 4; Lillie B., dau, 2. All born Ky Ky Ky.
The preceding household is headed by Joel’s brother John.
