This couple is in my database only because the widowed Jane Shirley was listed in the 1900 census as a mother-in-law with the family of Charles B. Carroll and Callie Hall, and I wanted to show how she was related, since she is not Callie’s mother.

1880 census of Harrison Co., Ky, enumerated 2 June, lists on p. 3 as family #17/18:
Shirley, James, 69, farmer, b. Va Va Va; Jane, 50, wife, b. Ky Ky Ky; Annie N., 12, dau, b. Ky Va Ky; Courtney, Harry C., 20, hired hand, works on farmer, b. Ky Ky Ky; Shirley, Thomas, 64, brother, b. Ky Va Va. (Also living with them as servants are a black couple named James and Belle Garnett and their two young children.)
