Notes for Hiram Edward T. Bayless
His given names are recorded as Hiram E. T. in the 1850 census, Hiram in the 1860 census, Edward in the 1870 census and on the marriage record of his daughter Lucy, and Hiram E. on his own marriage record and the 1880 census.
Census
1920 census of Moultrie Co., Illinois, Jonathan Creek township, enumerated 14 Jan, lists on p. 7A with the family of Jessie (age 34) and Mirtie (age 31) Elder:
Bayless, Hyram E., 68, widowed, laborer on farm, b. Ind Ky W.Va. The relationship column says “Home”, which judging by other households on the page is what the enumerator used to indicate unrelated boarders.
Notes for Hiram Edward T. & Laura A. (Family)
The index to Indiana marriage records (1800-1941) compiled by the W.P.A. lists the marriage on 23 Sep 1875 in Owen Co., Ind, of Hiram E. Balis and Laura A. White.
This family is in my database only to document the parents of Lucy E. Bayless who married James L. Gregory, son of George W. Gregory and Lucy Jane Hall (my 2nd cousin 3 times removed.) James and Lucy’s marriage record gives her parents as Edward and Lura Bayless.
Since she was not born until 1884, and was living with her uncle and aunt by the 1900 census, she does not appear with her parents in any census. The identification of her father with Hiram Edward Bayless, son of William and Lucy Bayless of Owen Co., Ind, is based primarily on the death certificate of her uncle Richard Daniel W. Bayless, which gives his parents as William and Lucy, and by the fit in their birthplaces.
Apparently only Laura died before 1900, though, because the Lexington Herald of Dec. 25, 1914 contains a brief notice reporting "Mr. H. E. Bayless of Mattoona, Ill., is visiting his son, Mr. John W. Bayless and family."
Census
1880 census of Owen Co., Indiana, Jackson township, enumerated 8 June, lists on p. 9 as family #85:
Bayless, Hiram E., 31, b. Ind Ohio Va, farmer; Laura, 23, wife, b. Ind Ind Ind; William A., son, 3, b. Ind Ind Ind; Theopolis, 1, son, b. Ind Ind Ind; Lucy P., 73, mother, widowed, b. Va Va Va.
I cannot find either Hiram or Laura in the 1900 census. Their son Theophilus is living in Kansas, their son Nathan is living in Bourbon Co., Ky with Hiram’s brother Nathan, and their children Lucy, Nellie and John are living in Bourbon Co., Ky with Hiram’s brother Richard Daniel.
