This family is in my database primarily to document the parents of Mary Ellen McCann who married Samuel Pettit. I’ve included more on their children than I usually do, because after Mary Ellen died, Samuel and Mary Ellen’s daughter Gertrude was raised by Mary Ellen’s parents, and their daughter Edna was raised by Mary Ellen’s sister Emily.

1870 census of Lewis Co., Ky, Crossing of Kinniconick precinct, Vanceburg P.O., enumerated 24 Aug, lists on p. 25 as family #179:
McCann, John, 37, laborer, b. Indiana; Elizabeth, 37; Henry M., 11; Mary E., 10; Emily A., 9; Martha C., 8; James G., 5; Robt W, 4; Sarah A., 3; Francis M., 1 (m). All children born in Kentucky.

1880 census of Pike Co., Illinois, Martinsburg township, enumerated 7 June, lists on p. 11 as family #75:
McCann, J. P., 51, b. Ind Ky Ky; Elizabeth, 51, b. Ky Ky Ky; Henry, 21, son; Emly, 18, dau; Martha, 16, dau; James, 15, son; Robert, 14, son; Sarah, 13, dau; Francis, 12, son; Laura, 11, dau. All children born Ky Ind Ky.

1900 census of Pike Co., Illinois, Spring Creek township, enumerated 18 June, lists on p. 13B as family #280/281:
McCann, John, 68, b. Mar 1832, Ind Ky Ky; Elizabeth, wife, 68, b. Feb 1832, Ky Ky Ky; Frank, son, 27, b. Nov 1872; Petty, Girtie, granddau, 12, b. Jan 1888. All children born Ky Ind Ky.

The son Frank must be Francis Marion; his birthdate is off by four years. Girtie Petty is Gertrude Pettit, daughter of Samuel Pettit and Mary Ellen McCann.
