His WW I draft registration card, filed 12 Sep 1918, records Bannie Bascom Smoot, age 43, residence Ringos Mills, Fleming Co., Ky, born 26 Mar 1875, occupation farming, self-employed, nearest relative Mrs. Bannie Smoot.
His gravestone, a double one with his second wife Barbara, has the years 1875 - 1956, and spells his name as Bannie B. Smoot.
The Kentucky death index lists Bannie B. Snoot (sic), age 80, died 2 Feb 1956 in Fleming Co., residence same.

1880 census of Fleming Co., Ky, Hillsboro precinct, enumerated 3 June, lists on p. 5 as family #38:
Smoot, Reuben, 80, widowed, farmer, b. Ky Va Va; Elizabeth, 34, dau, single; Solomon L., 26, son, single; James, 15, grandson; Banny D., 6, grandson. All except Reuben born Ky Ky Ky.
The death certificate of the James Smoot age 15 here records him as being an out-of-wedlock son of Elizabeth Smoot, recorded above as age 34. I therefore strongly suspect that Banny is Elizabeth’s son as well, although he might be the son of some other child of Reuben’s.

All of the children are from Bannie’s first marriage, to Vina Lathram.
1930 census of Fleming Co., Ky, district 5, enumerated 14 April, lists on p. 5A as family #101:
Smoot, Banny, 55, age at first marriage 23, farmer; Alice, wife, 58, age at first marriage 25.
The age at first marriage for Alice is probably wrong; she was recorded in the 1910 census with her parents as age 38, single.
