Notes for Reuben & Martha (Family)
Reuben and Martha were childhood sweethearts. After Martha’s first husband William Madison Bolt died, Martha and Reuben took up on the side and had several children together, even though Reuben was still married to Minerva Hylton. The children that Martha bore during the time between William’s death and her marriage to Reuben were sometimes referred to by the surname Bolt, and sometimes as McPeak.
This makes it hard to untangle the mothers of the chldren born between 1870 and 1877, since in the 1880 census the two families have been intermingled and are all listed with the surname McPeak.

Unfortunately I cannot find Martha and her children in the 1870 census.
1880 census of Floyd Co., Virginia, Burks Fork district, enumerated 23 June, lists on p. 30 as family #271:
McPeak, Reuben, 52, farmer; Martha, 47, wife; Palmeder, 16, dau; Larra F., 14, dau; Wm B., 12, son; Manda E., 12, dau; Martha E., 11, dau; Samrie E., 9, dau; George A., 7 overwritten with 6, son; Benjamon, 1, son. All born Va Va Va.
Only Benjamin was born after Reuben and Martha were married. Manda is Martha’s daughter since her maiden name was listed as Bond on her marriage record to William Reed Quesenberry; also she is not in the Reuben McPeak family in the 1870 census. Samrie is Minerva’s daughter from her birth record. I do not know who the mother of George is.
1900 census of Carroll Co., Virginia, Laurel Fork district, lists as family #253/259:
McPeak, Martha, 66, b. Oct 1833, widowed, mother of 7 children, 4 living; Bolt, Mahala P., dau, 33, b. May 1867, single, mother of 7 children, 6 living; McPeak, Benjamin E., son, 21, b. Feb 1879, single; Bolt, Caleb, grandson, 19, b. Oct 1800 (should be 1880); Delia F., granddau, 14, b. May 1886; Posey, grandson, 10, b. Oct 1889; Barney P., grandson, 2, b. July 1897; Julia, granddau, 0/12, b. May 1900; Walter W., grandson, 14, b. Mar 1886; Fielden F., grandson, 3, b. June 1896.
The break in the age orders suggests that Walter and Fielden have different parents than Caleb through Julia, but they are all Bolt’s, and Mahala is listed as the mother of 6 living children.
