Census records are more consistent with a birth date in 1861.

Be careful not to confuse him with James Lacy Brown, son of Daniel K. Brown and Rebecca Easterling, who married Mary Ellen Jenkins on 13 Mar 1879 in Magoffin Co., and who also lived near Bloomington. (Both the birth date and the informant Ollie Brown serve to distinguish which J. L. Brown this death record is for. James Lacy Brown did not have a son named Ollie, while John Lacy Brown did.)

Her death certificate records Mary Ellen Brown, age 76 years 11 months 11 days, birth date blank, born in Kentucky, died 11 Dec 1942 in Mount Sterling, Montgomery Co., Ky, married, wife of Lacy Brown, father Samuel W. Brown, mother’s maiden name Cyntha A. Nickell, both born in Ky, cause of death “no physician at time of death”, informant Ollie Brown, Mount Sterling, burial in Bloomington.

The age at death would imply a birth date of 31 Dec 1865, but it is probably off by one year, since she was recorded as age 5 in the 1870 census.

Morgan Co., Kentucky marriage records list the marriage on 27 Mar 1880 of John L. Brown and Mary E. Brown, at S. W. Brown’s by J. M. McGuire, witnesses A. J. McGuire and William Lykins.

Since this family apparently moved back and forth between Morgan and Magoffin counties at least twice between 1880 and 1910 (married in Morgan in March 1880, living in Magoffin in June 1880, living in Morgan in June 1900, living in Magoffin from 1910 forward), I do not know which of those two counties their children were born in .
