Census Notes for John Jackson & Nancy Summers (Family)
1850 census of Fleming Co., Ky, division 2, enumerated 29 Aug, lists on p. 49 as family #338:
John Ham, 49, b. Va (occupation blank); Nancy, 49, b. Ky; Thomas, 23, farmer, b. Ky; Thornton W., 20, laborer, b. Ky; Smith, 18, b. Ky; Elizabeth, 16, b. Ky; John A., 14, b. Ky; Martha A., 9, b. Ky; Samuel R., 7, b. Ky; Emily Ham, 23, b. Va.
Emily is the wife of John’s son Thomas. The next household is headed by John’s son Durret Ham, age 26, b. Ky, with his wife Rebecca.
1860 census of Rowan Co., Ky, enumerated 17 July, lists on p. 21 as family #162/166:
John Ham, 60, farmer; Martha, 60; Nancy, 20; Robert, 17.
I’m pretty sure this is the same John Ham because the neighbors are the same as 1850, but the name of his wife being different is confusing, as is the identity of Nancy age 20, for which there is no match in the 1850 census (not even with another Ham family.) I suspect what happened is that the census taker swapped the names of wife and daughter.
The following household is headed by John’s son Durret (listed as D. S. Ham age 31, although he was really older) with wife Rebecca, and the one before by John’s brother William (listed as W. B. Ham age 54) with wife Rebecca.
The change of county from Fleming to Rowan does not represent a relocation; these Ham families were living in the part of Fleming Co. around Triplett Creek that became part of Rowan Co. when it was formed in 1856.
1870 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Pine Grove precinct, lists as family #40 on p. 132B:
Ham, John, 69, farmer; Robert, 26; Sarah, 24; Rosetta, 6; Charles, 2. All family members are listed as born in Kentucky, although from other records it should be Ohio for Robert’s wife Sarah.
