Notes for Thomas Jefferson Kiser
His gravestone gives his birth date as Sep. 15, 1843, but it is probably off by three years. He was recorded as age 4 in the 1850 census, age 13 in the 1860 census, and age 53 born Sep 1846 in the 1900 census.
Be careful not to confuse him with his first cousin Jefferson J. Kiser, born 23 Oct 1844 in Russell Co., Virginia, died 12 Nov 1925, son of Elihu Kiser/Kizer and Jane “Jennie” Skeen, who married Sarah C. Gent and remained in Virginia, or with his nephew Thomas B. Kiser, son of Abednego Kiser and Eliza Ann Couch, born 23 Mar 1854 in Russell Co., Virginia, died 1 June 1924 in Carter Co., Ky. (Since there is no death record for this one, he having died before statewide death recording began in Kentucky, Ancestry.com suggests the death record for Abednego’s son Thomas as a “hint” when members are viewing any record that shows this one’s given name as Thomas, such as the 1900 census, and many researchers assume they are the same person.)
Notes for Sarah E. Fultz
Her death certificate records Sarah E. Kiser, age 64, born 1852 in Carter Co., Ky, died 1 May 1916 in Brushy precinct, Rowan Co., Ky, widowed, father Wesley Fultz, mother’s maiden name Sylva Stamper, cause of death paralysis due to dropsy, informant H. A. Kiser, Stella, Ky, burial in Jones graveyard.
The cemetery where Sarah and Thomas are buried is now called the Johnson-Coffee Cemetery. Either it changed names, or the death certificate is in error. Her gravestone gives her birth year as 1846. The 1900 census reported it as May 1848, but she does not appear with the Wesley Fultz family in the 1850 census (household visited in September, officially dated June), and in 1860 she was recorded as age 9, so she was probably born in May 1851, or possibly in late 1850 if the month in the 1900 census was incorrect.
Census Notes for Thomas Jefferson & Sarah E. (Family)
1870 census of Carter Co., Ky, precinct 2, Grayson P.O., enumerated 30 June, lists on pp. 28-29 as family #210/197:
Kiser, Jefferson, 27, b. Va, farmer; Sarah, 18, b. Ky; Disa, 1, b. Ky.
Jefferson’s age on this census (and on the 1910 census) is inconsistent with childhood census records as well as with the 1900 census and his gravestone. I give more credence to the 1846 birth date because reported ages of young children are usually more accurate.
