Lafayette’s surname is spelled as Byrom (or Byram) in all the censuses and on his marriage record, but as Byron on his gravestone and death certificate. This is probably because his son Nelson, who was the informant on the death certificate and who presumably ordered the headstone, used the spelling Byron.

The death certificate records Marcus L. Byron, age 79, birth date unknown, born in Virginia, died 21 July 1937 in Paragon, Piercy precinct, Rowan Co., Kentucky, farmer, widowed, late wife Sarah Byron, father unknown, mother’s maidenn name Sarah Elliott, born in Virginia, cause of death carcinoma of colon, informant Nelson Byron, Paragon, Ky, burial in Paragon Cem.

The Virginia birth places is incorrect, as is his mother’s maiden name. Nelson has apparently misinterpreted the question and entered the his own mother’s maiden name.

Her death certificate records Sarah Jane Byrom, age 72 years 11 months, birthdate blank, born in Blaze, Ky, died 1 Mar 1935 in Piercy precinct, Rowan Co., Ky, married, wife of Lafe Byrom, father Wm Elliotte, born in Blaze, Ky, mother’s maiden name Ruth Fallor, born in Morgan Co., Ky, cause of death heart disease, informant blank, burial in Paragon, Ky.

In the 1870 census, she appears with her paternal grandparents Samuel Scott Elliott and Frances Perry as Sarah J. Elliott, age 6. Samuel and Frances had no son named William who married a wife Ruth. Their son William married Damie Lewis (previously married to Milton Robinson) in 1872, and both were still living in 1870, with no daughter who would fit. Samuel did, however, have a son James A. Elliott who married Rutha E. Jones in July 1863. Rutha presumably died in early 1864, since James remarried in Aug 1864 to Sarah Caskey. But neither James nor his wife Sarah can be found in the 1870 census. What probably happened was that Ruth died in childbirth with this Sarah, and then James (and possibly his second wife) also died before 1870, so his parents raised his daughter. The informant on this death certificate was most likely just mistaken about which son of Samuel and Frances was Sarah’s father.

Morgan Co., Ky marriage records list the marriage on 16 Dec 1880 of Lafayette Byrom and Sarah J. Elliott, at S. S. Elliott’s by C. W. Collins, witnesses Benjamin Elliott and Simon Blankenship.

1910 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Pearce precinct, enumerated 19 April, lists on p. 2A as family #14:
Byrum, Sarah, wife, 47; Lafayette, husband, 53, first marriage for both, married 30 years, mother of 10 children, 10 living; John A., son, 14; Ellis, son, 13; Elmer, son, 13; Nelson, son, 2; Brown, Harvey, 55, widowed, hired hand. All born Ky Ky Ky.

1920 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Pearcy precinct, enumerated 29 Jan, lists on p. 6A as family #106/114:
Byrom, Lafe, 65, farmer; Sarah, wife, 61; Elmer, son, 22, laborer on railroad; Nelson, son, 14; Alice, dau, 8; Brown, Harve, 69, lodger, single (although it should be widowed), laborer saw logs.

1930 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Farmer’s precinct, enumerated 5 April, lists on p. 1B as family #14:
Byron, Lafe, 73, age at first marriage 24, farmer; Sarah J., wife, 65, age at first marrige 15; Ruba, dau, 18, married, age at first marriage 15; Laura K., dau, 3; Billie C., grandson, 1; Nelson, grandson-in-law, 23, married, age at first marriage 18.

The relationships on this household are messed up. Ruba should be Lafe and Sarah’s daughter-in-law, Laura their granddaughter, and Nelson their son.
