His obituary in the Roanoke Times reported “Silas P. Martin, 93, of Shawsville, passed away Thursday, January 30, 2003, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in McComas, West Virginia, he was the son of Frazier Martin and Rosa Martin Slusher. Silas was a combat veteran of World War II, having served with the army in France and Germany. He took an interest in auto mechanics at the age of twelve when he began working on Model T’s, and he continued this love of mechanics into the nineteen seventies. He was a longtime employee of Radford Army Ammunition Plant which he retired from in 1971 after twenty-five years of service.
