The birthdate is off by at least one year, based on census records. Jan 1896 would also be too close to that of his brother John. “Len Martin” is probably his uncle John Linville Martin, with whom he was living in the 1910 census.

In 1900 he was recorded (incorrectly) as Rufus Stegall, age 4, born March 1896, with his mother and her mother. Jennie had gone back to her maiden name, and the entire household was recorded under that surname.

In 1910 he was recorded as Rufus Martin, age 13, nephew, with his uncle John L. Martin, husband of Mottie’s sister Ida.
