Census Notes for Ewell Silcox
1830 census of Bath Co., Ky, lists:
Ewil Cillcock, 1 m 40-49, 1 m 20-29, 1 f 50-59.
1840 census of Bath Co., Ky, East of Slate Creek, lists on p. 79, line 11:
Ewill Cillcox, 1 m 40-49, 1 f 50-59.
1850 census of Bath Co., Ky, division 2, enumerated 2 Aug, lists as family #295:
Ewell Silcox, 60, b. Va, farmer; Elizabeth Silcox, 70, b. Ky.
This may be the parents of the Ewell Silcox who was listed as 51 in 1860. But if so, I cannot find the younger one in 1850. Alternatively, the age may be off by about 10 years in both censuses. That is, perhaps he should have been listed as fifty in 1850 (with Elizabeth age 70 being his mother), and sixty in 1860. Fifty and sixty sound enough alike that they may have been misheard.
Census Notes for Elizabeth “Betsy” Ann Wheeler
1850 census of Bath Co., Ky, division 2, enumerated 12 Aug, lists as family #407:
Charles Wheeler, 58, farmer, b. Va; Rachel, 48, b. Ky; Elizabeth, 24; Francis M. (m), 23; Thomas H., 20; Charles C., 17; Eliza I., 15; Lucy A., 13; Maria R., 11; Lorenzo D., 9; James K, 7. All children born in Kentucky.
Notes for Ewell & Elizabeth “Betsy” Ann (Family)
I do not know the actual father of Mary and Sarah, but they took the name of Silcox after their mother married.
Census
1860 census of Bath Co., Owingsville P.O., enumerated 7 Aug, lists on p. 200 as family #1446:
Uel Silcox, 51, farmer; Elizabeth, 50; Mary, 18; Sarah, 13. All born in Kentucky.
Mary should be 8, not 18, and Sarah probably about 6. Elizabeth would be 34 if the 1850 census is correct.
1870 census of Bath Co., Ky, Mudlick precinct, enumerated 2 Aug, lists on p. 7 as family #50/51:
Sillcox, Elizabeth, 39; Mary, 18; John, 4/12, b. Sep.
It’s strange that Elizabeth has got younger and Mary has not aged a bit in the decade!
John is probably Mary’s son rather than Elizabeth’s. The next household is Elizabeth’s daughter Sarah, listed as 15, with her husband Frank Purvis.
