He was recorded as age 7 months in the 1860 census, which had an official basis date for ages as of June 1. His age in the 1870 and 1880 censuses is suggestive of a birthdate in 1858 or late 1857 (12 in 1870, 22 in 1880.) The 1900 census said Sep 1859, which is likely to be the correct date, since reporting a 2 year old as age 7 months would be very unusual, while reporting a 10 year old as age 12 is not.

His gravestone gives his birthdate as Sep 16, 1860, which cannot be right since he was recorded at a visit taken in July.

His reported birthplace also varies. The 1880 and later censuses reported it as Ohio, but the 1860 and 1870 censuses reported it as Virginia.

Her birthdate was given as April 1861 in the 1900 census, and her gravestone says April 12, 1859, but the 1860 census recorded her as age 2 months.
