The Virginia Regimental History series lists Francis Collins, age 43, carpenter, enlisted on 9 Apr 1862 in Floyd, Virginia as a private in Company B, Virginia 54th Infantry Regiment. Mustered in on 4 Sep 1862. Mustered out on 13 Mar 1863.
The reported age at enlistment would imply a birthdate about 1819, which is later than is suggested by most census records.

Sarah Elizabeth’s age is very approximate. She was recorded in the censuses as 17 in 1850, 23 in 1860, 41 in 1870, and 42 in 1880. I’m splitting the difference between the first two.

1870 census of Carroll Co., Virginia, Pine Creek district, enumerated 27 Aug, lists on p. 22 as family #140/144:
Collens, F. M., 54, farmer; Elizabeth, 41; Ruth, 16; Albert, 11; Cox, J., 13; Floyd, 12. All born in Virginia.
Albert does not appear in the 1860 census, so he must have really have been born in the second half of 1860. Floyd should also really be only 10 (he was recorded as age 7 months in 1860.)
1880 census of Carroll Co., Virginia, Pine Creek district, enumerated 10 June, lists on p. 16 as family #139/146:
Collins, F. M., 60, farming, b. N.C. N.C. N.C.; Elizabeth, 42, wife, b. Va Va Va; Albert Lee, 22, son; Lutitia E., 9, dau; Iowa Texenner, 6, dau; Charles H., 3, son; Simkins, Sarah A., 16, servant. All the children are listed as born Va Va Va, which is inconsistent with the birthplace reported for Francis.
The preceding household is that of Francis’ brother Leathan Collins (age 65) and wife Nancy age 49, and the one before that is headed by Sarah Elizabeth’s son Jefferson W. Cox from her first marriage.
