Notes for Robert I. Davis
His (Union) Civil War draft registration, taken July-Sept 1863, records Robert Davis, age 30, residence Johnson Co., Mo, farmer, white, married, born in North Carolina.

His birthplace is also given as North Carolina on the 1870 census, but as Tennessee on his son John’s death certificate and on the father’s birthplace field in John’s 1920 census reading. The most likely explanation is that he was born in North Carolina, but spent his childhood in Tennessee, so that his son John thought he was born there.

His gravestone has a masonic emblem at the top and is inscribed Robert I. Davis, died Mar 22, 1876, aged 47 yrs. 1 m. 14 ds.

Notes for Robert I. & Mary Adeline (Family)
Gasconade Co., Missouri marriage register records on p. 48 (volume unknown) the marriage of Robert I. Davis of Johnson Co. and Mary A. Hilderbran of Gasconade Co. on 7 Mar 1858 in Gasconade Co. by Elder L. M. Mahaney.

(The scanned image of the register on Ancestry.com does not show the volume number. Robert’s middle initial has been transcribed as J., but it looks identical to the word “I” in phrases such as “I did join in the holy bonds of matrimony”, and diffferent from the J in the recorder’s signature, Jas Arrott. (They look very similar, but the I’s have a smaller hook at the bottom that goes more upward, while the hook on the J’s is flatter and farther to the left.)
