The 1900 census listed Samuel’s birthdate as Sep 1828, but other records are suggestive of an earlier date, about 1825 or 1826.

William Pervis, 24, farmer; Martha, 21; Margaret, 2; Saml Pervis, 30, farmer; Cynthia, 30; Allen, 13; Thomas, 11; Rachel, 8; Mary, 6; Charles, 2; Samuel, 1. All born in Kentucky.
William is the son of John Purvis and Margaret Proctor, and is thus Cynthia’s half-brother.
1870 census of Bath Co., Ky, White Sulphur precinct, enumerated 9 June, lists on p. 14 as family #96:

From Thomas’s death certificate, the mother of Elizabeth and Thomas is Alsey Jane Tincher, who married Samuel Purvis in 1865. It seems strange that Samuel would name two sons born 18 years apart both Thomas Franklin Purvis, but perhaps since the older one ended up going by Frank, he wanted to make sure that he had a son who used the name Thomas.

Notes for Samuel & Elizabeth A. (Family)
It is possible that Elizabeth is the same person as Alsey Jane Tincher, perhaps named Elizabeth Alsy Jane, since John L. would have been born about 1870. Samuel appeared in the 1870 census with no wife. On the other hand, she might be the same person as Elizabeth “Betsy” Ann Wheeler, whose husband Ewell Silcox died before 1870.
