His WW I draft registration card, filed 12 Sep 1918, records John T. (Howard crossed out) Howerton (written above), age 38, residence Clearfield, Rowan Co., Ky, born 14 May 1880, farmer, self-employed, nearest relative wife Sadie Howard. (Apparently a clerical error - the cards are filled out by registration clerks, not by the person registering.) The signature is J. T. Howerton.
Since he does not appear in the 1880 census, recorded in June, the 1881 birthdate reported in other records is presumably the correct one.
His gravestone has the inscription “Pvt 109 Co Coast Arty WWI”
His death certificate records John T. Howerton, age 71, born 14 May 1881 in Kentucky, died 13 Sep 1952 in Clearfield, Rowan Co., Ky, married, farmer, father John W. Howerton, mother’s maiden name Elizabeth Menifee, cause of death cerebral hemorrhage, informant Mrs. John Howerton, burial in Rose Cemetery.
