There are quite a few articles in Texas newspapers of the thirties and forties refering to Marcelle Lively Hamer, assistant curator of the Texas collection at the University of Texas Library.
The El Paso Herald-Post of 28 May 1965 contains a long (17 paragraphs) article on her retirement from her post as librarian of the Southwest Room at the El Paso Public Library. Most of it is on the Southwest collection. About Marcelle’s early career it reports: “Born in Whitewright, Texas in 1900, Mrs. Hamer attended Southeast Normal College in Durant, Oklahoma, junior college at Christian College in Missouri, got a bachelor’s degree at the University of Oklahoma, and a master’s degree at the University of Texas. While writing her master’s thesis in Southwestern literature at Austin, she took a job in the University of Texas library and spent the next twenty years there. In 1955 board chairman Irving Schwartz and Librarian Elizabeth Kelly persuaded her to comt to El Paso to build up the Southwest Reference Department. ... Mrs. Hamer plans to leave June 6 for Fort Worth where her daughter, Mrs. Gene Hull, and four grandchildren reside.”
