Notes for John Aldridge
Many family trees on Ancestry.com mistakenly identify Millie’s husband with the John Henry Aldridge born 21 Aug 1873, died 30 July 1967 in Cadiz, Trigg Co., Kentucky, son of Sam Aldridge and Victoria Nunn, who also had a wife named Millie. That is mistaken, though, because that John and Millie Aldridge appear in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 censuses of Trigg Co. (in southwest Kentucky), while this John and Millie Aldrich/Aldridge were not married until 1908, and were listed in the 1910 and 1920 censuses in Rowan Co.
There was also a John W. Aldridge age 7 in McClean Co., Ky, but he married a wife named Leona and moved to Fort Worth, Texas, and a John H. Aldridge who was born 12 Mar 1874 in Boyle Co., Ky, son of Winfield Scott Aldridge and Martha R. Hamilton, but he married a wife named Janie Bland and moved to Marion Co., Ky, where he died in 1946.
I only have John and Millie’s marriage record from the newspaper announcement. Clark Co. marriage books might provide more details on his parents and/or birthplace.
Notes for Millie Prather
Her death certificate records Millie Steagall, age 51 years 11 months 28 days, born 16 Aug 1878 in Kentucky, died 18 July 1929 in Morehead, Rowan Co., Ky, married, wife of Bob Steagall, father Frank Prater, mother’s maiden name Annie Donhou, both born in Kentucky, cause of death tuberculoses of the intestins and longues, informant Bob Steagall, Morehead, Ky, burial in Bradley Cemetery.
Since she was listed as age 4 in the 1880 census, with two younger brothers listed as ages 3 and 2, she cannot have been born in 1878. The earliest possible date would be in 1876, and 1875 or 1874 is more likely. (She was listed as 35 in 1910, and 45 in 1920. I haven’t found her in 1900.)
There is no stone for her in Clearfield (Bradley) Cemetery under any of her many surnames, but there are many graves that are unmarked or marked only with blank stones.
Notes for John & Millie (Family)
The Winchester News of Monday, 9 Nov 1908 reported “A marriage license was issued Saturday afternoon to Mr. John Aldrich of Ford, and Miss Millie Prather of Morehead. The marriage ceremony was performed by Judge Evans in the County Clerk's room.”
Ford is a small village in Clark County.
Census
1910 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Morehead precint, enumerated 30 April, lists on p. 10B as family #179/181:
Aldrich, John, 35, first marriage, farm hand, working out; Millie, wife, 35, second marriage, married 1 year, mother of 4 children, 4 living, b. Ky N.C. Illinois.
Millie’s children from her marriage to James Riddle were apparently living with their father or another relative. I have not found them in 1900 or 1910. (But there are many Riddle families that I have not found in the 1910 census. I suspect a whole section of Rowan Co. may have been missed by the census.)
1920 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Morehead precint, enumerated 12 Jan, lists on p. 4B as family #34:
Oldridge, John, 45, farmer, b. Ky Ky Ky; Millie, wife, 45, b. Ky Ky Ky; Prather, Frank, father-in-law, 71, widowed, b. NC Ky Ky.
