Hamilton Co., Ohio marriage book 346, p. 104, records the marriage on 15 Nov 1924 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., of Eugene Lee Pettit, age 22 on 6 Oct 1924 (implying a birth in 1902), residence 1649 Hemper Lane, born in Kentucky, father C. S. Pettit, mother’s maiden name Florida Beard, his first marriage, to Hazel Sorrell, age 21 on 15 Nov 1924 (implying a birth in 1903), residence 1410 Eastern Ave, born in Kentucky, father Tom Vance, mother’s maiden name Emma Dixon, her second marriage, previous marriage ended in divorce, Sorrell being her married name, by U. Vanbeshmann, Minister of the Gospel.
Hazel’s reported age on this marriage license is apparently off by four years. The only Hazel Vance I can find in Kentucky or Ohio with a father named Thomas or Tom and a mother named Emma was listed as age 2 in the 1910 census and age 12 in the 1920 census. Since that Hazel Vance’s address in the 1920 census was virtually identical to the address in the marriage license, they are apparently the same person. The census ages would imply she was born in 1907 (sometime between April and the end of the year), and thus only about 15 when she married William Sorrell and 17 when she married Eugene Pettit - certainly of marriageable age, but 4 years younger than she reported.
