From the U.S. Civil War Soldier Records database: George Andrew Johnston, farm laborer, age 24, residence Wyoming Co., Virginia, enlisted on 7 Sep 1863 as a private, promoted to 1st Lieutenant in Co. D, Virginia 45th Infantry Battalion on 9 July 1863. (I don’t see how someone can enlist as a private two months after they were promoted to lieutentant; probably the enlistment date should be 1862.)
His gravestone says George A. Johnston, 1st Lt 45th BN VA Inf C.S.A. Died Oct 2, 1893.

MURDER IN MOREHEAD
Sheriff M.F. Fouch of Rowan County stepped into the Clerk's office Monday to get some papers, when a dispute arose between him and the Clerk, George A. Johnson. Fouch drew his pistol and fired at the clerk, but missed him. He then fired again, the second shot taking effect over the right eye, killing Johnson instantly.

At Morehead the grand jury indicted Sheriff Fouch for murder for the killing of Clerk Johnson.
His gravestone says George A. Johnston, 1st Lt 45th BN VA Inf C.S.A. Died Oct 2, 1893.

1880 census of Logan Co., West Virginia, Triadelphia precinct, enumerated 11 June, lists on p. 4 as family #32:
Johnston, Geo, 43, farmer; Velra, 31, wife; Mary, 5, dau; Manerva, 3, dau; Mahala, (3|1), dau; Andrew, 1, son. All born WVa WVa WVa.
The age for Mahala is a 1 and 3 on top of each other. It is impossible to tell which digit was original and which intended as the correction, but later records say that she was born in March 1879. Valerie probably died before 1900, since in that census Mahala, William and George are all living with Mary and her husband Edward F. Clarke.
