WICHITA FALLS, Texas, Feb. 18. - Radioman Edward Fielding Clarke, 22, all-state tackle on the Wichita Falls high school football team of 1937, was reported to be one of seven men killed Monday night when a Navy bomber crashed in the mountains of Virginia. Two of the nine crew were reported to have survived the crash.
Clarke, a Naval reservist, was called to active duty a year ago. He attended Texas Wesleyan College in Fort Worth in 1938, starring in athletics there.
Surviving are his wife, two children, his mother, Mrs. Mary Brand, all of Wichita Falls, and two brothers and a sister.”
The two brothers and sister would be his Brand half siblings, with whom he was raised. He also had a surviving half-brother Spencer Gray Clarke, with whom he probably had little or no contact. Since Feb 18, 1942 was a Wednesday, Monday night would be Feb 16.
