Notes for Charles Wesley “Chink” Martin
His obituary reported:
C.W. MARTIN PASSES AWAY SATURDAY (30 Aug 1934 - Oakland, Illinois)
Was Highly respected By All in This community Where He Had Resided All His Life
This community was shocked Saturday when the news of the death of C. W. Martin, which occurred at his home northeast of this city at about 10:30 Saturday morning, was announced. Mr Martin was taken ill while attending the Coles county fair and while it was generally known that he was confined to his bed, few knew that the end was so near. "Chink", as he was known to all, had the respect and esteem of everybody who knew him. His genial and sunny disposition easily made friends for him and he easily retained them. Practically his entire life has been lived in this community on different farms and no doubt all his neighbors in the different communities around Oakland where he resided will say as one of his last neighbors did after his death, "I never had a better neighbor than "Chink" Martin. That's a splendid tribute to any man - "Chink" Martin was that kind of a man.
C. W. Martin, son of Mr and Mrs David Martin, was born near Oakland 63 years ago and has lived practically all his life in this community. He was united in marriage to Miss Harriett Foley in March, 1891, at Charleston, IL and to this union five children were born, one daughter, Mrs Eula Winkleblack preceeding her father in death. The following children, together with his companion, survive: Mrs Eva Lane, Mrs Elsie McBride, Mrs Vera Schwartzman, all of Lansing, MI; Mrs Wanda Nichols, Oakland. One brother, A. J. Martin, of Chicago, and one sister, Mrs Sarah Bales, of Charleston, also survive.
Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at 2:30 from the Taber & Swinford funeral home on East Main. Rev V. S. Chaffee officiating. Pallbearers were son-in-laws of the deceased.
