His birthdate is very uncertain. He was recorded as 21 in 1860 (suggesting 1839), as 25 in 1870 and 35 in 1880 (suggesting 1845), as 64 born Oct 1835 in 1900, as 75 in 1910, and as age 80 born 31 Mar 1833 on his death certificate.

If the 1840 census is correct, then he would be born either after June 1835, or before June 1830, since there were no males age 5 to 9 in the household. I have not found him at all in the 1850 census, which would probably be the best indicator of his age. He may have been living with relatives of his mother, perhaps recorded under their surname. The best estimate is sometime between late 1835 and 1839, making him the son under 5 in the 1840 census.

In 1900 he was recorded with his sister Mary and her husband Silas Oppenheimer in Sandy Hook, Elliott Co., Ky, as Hugh Evans, brother-in-law, age 64, b. Oct 1835, Ky N.C. Va, single.

In 1910 he was living with them in Paintsville, Johnson Co., Ky, as Hugh Evans, 35, single, b. Ky Va Ky.
