Her death certificate records Nancy Anne Case, age 81 years 4 months 15 days, born 9 Nov 1829 in Ohio, died 24 Feb 1911 in Meigs township, Adams Co., Ohio, widowed, father James Smalley, mother’s maiden name Abagail Varvel, both born in Ohio, cause of death paralysis and hemoplegia, informant Dr. J. W. McLaughlin, Lawshe, Ohio, burial in Purtee Cemetery.

The maiden name for her mother is incorrect. Her parents’ marriage record as well as the death certificates of three of Nancy Ann’s siblings agree that Abigail’s maiden name was Phillips. Probably the informant knew that she had been living with the John Wesley Varvel family, and misinterpreted the connection.

The relationships starting with Albert are expressed relative to Nancy, rather than to John as they should be. (Either that or Nancy should be recorded as head of household.)

In 1900 Nancy is listed with her daughter Nancy J. and son-in-law John Wesley Varvel, as Case, Nancy A., mother-in-law, 70, b. Nov 1829, Oh Oh Oh, widowed, mother of 9 children, 5 living.

1860 census of Adams Co., Ohio, Meigs township, Dunbarton P.O., enumerated 5 July, lists on p. 92 as family #653/638:
Harvey Case, 38, farmer, b. Ky; Ann, 31, b. Ohio; Sarah, 14; Thomas, 11; Edward, 9; Garrett, 7; John, 5; Emma, 3; Albert, 6/12. All children born in Ohio.
