Lewis Wagoner is in my tree because his second wife Rebecca McClanahan was my 2C4R, and his daughter Nancy Jane (born out of wedlock to Nancy Ann Smalley Case) married my 3C3R John Wesley Varvel Jr.

1850 census of Adams Co., Ohio, Franklin township, enumerated 23 Sep, lists on p. 16 as family #105:
Lewis Waggoner, 38, farming; Caroline, 36; Leander J., 15; Nancy, 13; John, 11; Isaac, 9; Aaron, 7. All born in Ohio.
1860 census of Adams Co., Ohio, Franklin township, Locust Grove P.O., enumerated 19 July, lists on p. 133 as family #955/935:
Lewis Wagoner, 45, farmer, married within the year; Rebecca J,. 22, married within the year; John, 14, Isaac, 12; Nathaniel A., 9; George A., 6; Lewis P., 4; Martha A., 2. All born in Ohio.
There are very large age discrepancies (7 years) for John and Isaac between this census and the 1850 one. (And possibily for Nathaniel as well, if he is the same as the son listed as Aaron in 1850.)
1870 census of Pulaski Co., Missouri, Big Piney township, Waynesville P.O., enumerated 3 June, records on p. 4 as family #29:
Wagoner, Lewis, 54, farmer, b. Ohio; Sarah, 31, b. Missouri; Isaac, 23; Nathaniel, 19; A. George, 16; P. Lewis, 14; E. Mary, 9; E. Margarett, 5; N. James, 2. Wilson, Fielding, 10; R. William, 8; Elizabeth, 5. All Wagoners born in Ohio, all Wilsons in Missouri.
I doubt all these family members were going by their middle names with a leading initial. The entire page follows the same pattern. Apparently the census taker assumed that “last names first” meant you should also put the first name last with the middle initial before it.
