Notes for Ebert “Ebb” S. Fraley
His obituary in the Portsmouth Daily Times of Mon, April 5, 1971 reported:
“Services for Ebb Fraley, 77, of 2310 Charles St., who died Saturday in Scioto Memorial Hospital are to be conducted Wednesday at 2pm at Melcher Funeral Home. A native of Elliott County, KY, he was a World War I veteran and a retired Norfolk & Western Railway fireman. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Hattie Fraley; four sons, Theodore, 1923 Thomas Ave., Paul, 2347 Charles St., and Norman and Roger, both at home; seven brothers, Thurman of Ithaca, MI, Lindsey of Tollesboro, KY, John and Columbus, both of Wheelersburg, George of Pittsurgh, PA, Ballard, 612 Offnere St., and Elza, 324 Second St., a sister, Mrs. Susan Lands of Mount Sterling, and five grandchildren. Rev. Curtis Jones is to officiate at the services with interment in Memorial Burial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7-9pm tonight and from 2-4 and 7-9pm Tuesday.”
Findagrave.com indexes his grave as Ebenezer S. Fraley, but the actual stone, photographed, is inscribed Ebb. I have seen no primary records that include the name Ebenezer: he is recorded as Elbert in the 1900 census, Eb in 1910, and Egvert (or something similar - definitely ends in -rt) in 1920. So I suspect Ebenezer was just someone’s guess at what Ebb was short for.
