The 1900 census records his birth date as Feb 1844, but he was recorded as age 4 in 1850 and age 14 in 1860.
His death certificate records Joseph Hiley, age about 83 years, birthdate D.K., born in Ky, died 21 June 1927 in Salt Lick, Bath Co., Ky, married, farmer, father Bird Hiley, mother’s maiden name July Sexton, both born in Ky, cause of death weak heart, informant Mrs. Joe Hiley, Salt Lick, Ky, burial in McClain Cemetery.

Hiley, Joseph, 36, farmer; Mary J., 34, wife; Epeson, James Robert, 26, brother; Hiley, George, 18, cousin; Amanda E., 19. All born in Kentucky.
George is the son of Joseph’s uncle George W. Highley and Elizabeth Shrout. The “brother” relationship for James Robert is wrong; he is the son of Jackson Epperson and Polly Ann Johnson, and no apparent relation to Joseph at all. He is probably a cousin of George’s wife Amanda Ellen, daughter of James M. Epperson and Hannah Blevins.
