1840 census of Bath Co., Ky, records:
William Vice Jr., 1 m 50-59, 1 f 50-59; 2 m 15-19, 1 m 10-14, 1 m 5-9, 1 m < 5; 2 f 20-29, 1 f 15-19, 2 f < 5.
The structure of this household is confusing. Since it includes a female 50-59, one would assume that was most likely William’s wife, but she would be too old to be the mother of the three children under 5. They are more likely to be children of the two women 20-29. Yet there is no other male over 19 besides William.
1850 census of Bath Co., Ky, district 1, enumerated 30 July, lists on pp. 25-26 as family #195:
William Vice, 60; Nancy, 33; Simpson, 23; Sillender (or Lillender, male), 16; Milford, 14; Elizabeth A, 13; Mahala, 11; Surinda (or Lurinda), 9; Juda, 8; Malinda, 8; John, 6; Melissa, 2.
(Based on comparison with other names such as Sarah and Louisa, this enumerater makes S and L basically indentical, except that the stroke on the L usually extends slightly below the baseline, while the stroke on the S usually stops at it. Both end vertically and do not extend to the left or the right.)
The next household is headed by Jehu Vice, age 36, with wife Ann, and the one after that by Joseph M. Vice, age 38, with wife Caroline.
