Notes for Leroy “Roy” Hawkins
His gravestone, a double one with Mattie, gives his name as Leroy and the years 1914-1995, but all of the obituaries of her family describe her as Mrs. Roy Hawkins.
The SSDI lists Leroy Hawkins, born 9 Jan 1914, died 16 Dec 1995, last residence South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana.
His obituary in the South Bend Tribune reported:
“ELKHART - LeRoy Hawkins, 81, of 57501 Edwards St., died at 12:10 p.m. Saturday in Rosewood Terrace Nursing Home. Mr. Hawkins retired from Taylor Products in 1973 after 35 years. He was born Jan. 9, 1914, in Winchester, Ind. He married Mattie Singer. She died Jan. 20, 1989. Surviving are two sons, Roy and Allen, both of Elkhart; a stepdaughter, June Gongwer of Elkhart; a stepson, Jimmy Nichols of Elkhart; and two sisters, Elizabeth Pipke of South Bend and Lucille Petit of Manchester, Ohio.”

The 1938 City Directory for Elkhart, Indiana records Roy Hawkins, laborer, with wife Pearl, address 1034 E. Indiana Ave.
1940 census of Elkhart Co., Indiana, Elkhart ED 20-35, enumerated 11 April, lists on p. 62A:
Hawkins, Roy, 26, laborer on road construction, b. Indiana; Pearl, wife, 26, b. Kentucky; Jean, dau, 8, b. Ky; Billie, son, 5, b. Ky; Allen, son, 1, b. Indiana. Family living in Elkhart, Indiana in 1934. Christy, Mintie, mother-in-law, 59, widowed, b. Ky, living in Bath Co., Ky in 1935.
Pearl is on one of the lines with supplemental information; it gives her parents as both born in Kentucky. I cannot find any Pearl Christy (or variant spellings) born about 1914 in Kentucky, nor can I find birth records in Kentucky for Jean or Billie. Possibly they were not really born in Kentucky.
