Notes for Ruby Marie Hogge
The Kentucky birth index lists Marie Hogge, born 5 Oct 1919 in Rowan Co., mother’s maiden name Lulie Chick.
Her obituary reported:
“Canton educator Ruby Marie Mabry died peacefully on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at the age of 93. She taught at Cherry School and Madge Youtz elementary schools and served the Canton Public School system for more than 35 years.
Mrs. Mabry began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in Pond Lick, Ky., and ended teaching in a sleek, modern building at Madge Youtz Elementary School in Canton. She began as a classroom teacher and later became a reading specialist. She attended college in Kentucky and earned a Master of Education at Kent State University. She won a number of teaching awards during her career.
Blessed with a keen intelligence, she also had a strong work ethic, a fierce independence and a formidable determination derived from her Scottish heritage and her Depression-era childhood in the hills and hollows of eastern Kentucky. Her father, H. Tilden Hogge, was a tobacco farmer, and her mother, Lula Click Hogge, was a teacher who rode miles on horseback to a one-room schoolhouse. As a child, Ruby often rode behind her.
Teachers and education superintendents ran in her family, as well as judges and lawyers. She encouraged her children and her nieces and nephews to choose education as a profession, and many did. Her love of education led her to donate land adjacent to the H. Tilden Hogge Elementary School in Cranston, Ky., for the creation of an outdoor environmental program, named "Ruby's Hillside." It will spur a hands-on study of climate change, artificial seed propagation and responsible land development.
Mrs. Mabry lived alone on the family farm in Freeburg, Ohio, until a few years ago. She created huge flower and vegetable gardens, canning hundreds of jars of prized soup every year. Her many colleagues, friends and neighbors came to the farm to swing on the front porch and to take home baskets of corn, green beans, and bouquets of roses and lilacs.
Mrs. Mabry and her husband, Perry W. Mabry, who died in 1989, had five children: Joe, who died in 1961 as he graduated from college; Larue Mabry Hall of Silver Lake, Ohio; Judy K. Knepper of Alexandria, Va.; Donna Mabry (Alan O'Leary) of Rehoboth Beach, Del.; and Clayton Mabry (Connie) of King Ferry, N.Y. She also leaves seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
After her retirement, Ruby maintained a home in Lakeland, Fla., where she had a lively and loving group of friends. She was a member of the Sanctuary Stock Club and the Washington Township Farm Women's Club. She traveled to Mexico and Europe and made several cross-country trips with buddies. The family wishes to acknowledge her many colleagues, friends and relatives who gave her joy; they also wish to commend The Gardens of Western Reserve and Harbor Lights Hospice.
Burial will take place later in the year at the Mabry Cemetery in Cranston, Ky., immediately before the dedication of Ruby's Hillside.”
