Morgan Co., Ky birth records list Stephen S. Gray, born 18 Feb 1853, father S. D. Gray, mother’s maiden name Mary Whitt (or White).
The census records, though, are very inconsistent with that being the birthdate for this Stephen Gray, who was recorded as age 2 in 1860 (with three older siblings, aged 9, 6 and 4), as age 13 in 1870, and as age 23 in 1880. I think what is most likely is that the Stephen born in Feb 1853 died in infancy, and the family reused the name for a son born about 1857.
