The reported birthdate may be wrong. It fits with the 1870 census, when she was listed as age 9, but her age in that census is suspect because it also lists her sister Elizabeth as age 11, and Elizabeth was definitely born after June 1860 because she does not appear in the 1860 census. In the 1880 census, Elizabeth was recorded as 17 and Martha as 16, but if they were both born in March, it is unlikely they were exactly one year apart. So I suspect really that Elizabeth was about 9 in 1870 and Martha about 7.
