1850 census of Letcher Co., Ky, district 2, enumerated 10 Sep, lists on p. 27 as family #189:
James Rowark, 65, b. Ky; Elizabeth, 41, b. “State of C”; Tillith, 13, mulatto; Elizabeth, 11; Marthaan, 9; Jesse, 8; Manerva, 6; Clerinda, 4. All children born in Kentucky.
The annotation “State of C” also appears on the page for Shaderick Combs Sr, age 66. It could be for Carolina, but I think it more likely that the “C” stands for “Country”, and that it was the enumerator’s way of saying that the state was unknown.
1860 census of Letcher Co., Ky, Whitesburg P.O., enumerated 6 July, lists on p. 54 as family #345:
James Roark, 71, b. Va; Elizabeth, 54, b. unknown; Martha, 20, b. Ky; Manerva, 18, b. Ky; Marinda, 14, b. Ky; James, 8, b. Ky.
1870 census of Letcher Co., Ky, precinct 3, Whitesburg P.O., enumerated 31 July, lists on p. 11 as family #65:
Roark, Jessee, 27, farmer; Sarah, 25; Mary, 3; Armelda, 7/12, b. Oct; Manurva, 25; William, 6; Armelda, 2. All born in Kentucky. Elizabeth, 65, b. Tenn.
The order suggests that Manurva is the mother of William age 6 and Armilda age 2. Jesse would not have two daughters both named Armelda.
